Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future was created in 1998 as a statewide environmental advocacy organization. Since our founding, we have achieved significant legal and policy victories that reduce pollution and protect the environment. We have provided millions of dollars in pro bono legal services, setting critical precedents and enforcing environmental laws across the commonwealth. 

The team at PennFuture is building upon its founding doctrine and working to protect public health, restore and protect natural resources, and move Pennsylvania toward a clean energy future. With offices in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Mt. Pocono, our team litigates cases before regulatory bodies and in local, state, and federal courts; advances legislative action on a state and federal level; provides public education; and assists citizens in public advocacy.

During its 20-year history, PennFuture has: 

• Advocated for millions in federal funding to improve and protect water quality in local streams and rivers, including the multi-state Chesapeake Bay watershed; 
• Led the campaigns for Growing Greener and the second, $625 million Growing Greener II bond initiative--in Pennsylvania, creating financial support for environmental programs; 
• Fought for a strong state rule to clean up toxic mercury pollution from Pennsylvania coal-fired power plants; 
• Played an important role in Pennsylvania’s first wind energy projects, including almost all of the first 24 wind farms, and helped extend the federal wind energy production tax credit; 
• Represented families that successfully fought shale gas well pads in residential neighborhoods and near schools; 
• Reduced the negative impacts of natural gas production in public forests and parks; 
• Led the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard that requires renewable energy sources to be part of the electricity supply; 
• Advocated for passage of Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency resource standard; 
• Helped pass the Alternative Energy Investment Act, a $650 million energy fund that includes $180 million for solar; 
• Helped pass Act 129 to require utilities to implement robust energy conservation programs, saving electric consumers billions of dollars; 
• Intervened in utility rate cases before the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) in support of energy efficiency and renewable energy, and to make sure clean energy alternatives are available to all Pennsylvanians; 
• Took legal action against U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works, one of the largest polluters in Pennsylvania for violation of the Clean Air Act.
